Even if you don’t mow your lawn for a month or two, you are unlikely to have flowers just popping up. Traditional lawns are barren wastelands devoid of food and habitat for our wild neighbors. The problem with this is that a good, traditional lawn is a monoculture of grass - it is the opposite of biodiversity. Participating in this has been a good reminder to me of just how much our local pollinators and ground nesters need biodiversity, not lawns. The goal of No Mow May is to pause mowing during the month of May, allowing flowers to bloom in your lawn to help early season pollinators. I’m thinking about this right now because we are nearing the end of No Mow May.
